CASINOS IN THE NEWS: REPORTS IN THE STATE LIBRARY

The prospect of building casinos in Massachusetts is very much in the news today. A recent Sunday Boston Globe (January 10th, 2010 page C1) had an interview with State Senator Stan Rosenberg, who has travelled around the country to garner information about the overall issue of casinos.

The State Library has numerous reports and overall holdings on this timely subject in the online catalog. Also, the Special Collections Department of the Library collects papers from legislators and other public figures, usually when they leave office. The papers of former Representatives Mary Jeannette Murray and George Rogers contain materials relating to the casino issue. New England Casino Gaming Report

The State Library has received a report called New England Casino Gaming: Update 2009 by University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth’s Center for Policy Analysis, New England Gaming Research Project. As of 03/24/2009 this report is available but not in our online catalog.

The Executive Summary says: “The update includes new patron origin and financial data for Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut; Twin River and Newport Grand Slots in Rhode Island; and Hollywood Slots Hotel Raceway in Bangor, Maine.

Two recent developments are affecting the casino gaming market: “(1) the onset of what is now the longest and deepest recession in U.S history, since the Great Depression and (2) the emergence of an increasingly competitive Northeastern gaming market that encompasses both the New England and the Mid-Atlantic states.”

New Casino Reports

The State Library has received three new reports on casinos:

Governor Deval Patrick and Secretary of the Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development Daniel O’Connell have issued: Destination Resort Casinos: Creating Jobs, Growing the Economy.

We also received a report commissioned by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce: Casino Gaming In Massachusetts: An Economic, Fiscal and Social Analysis.

And, finally, a report from The Innovation Group in New Orleans from May of 2007: Massachusetts Gaming Market Potential and Economic Impact Assessment : The Venetian Casino Resort.
